The Cross Is Enough

The journey of writing our song, “† (just the cross)”, started in Haiti and ended in a cabin in North Georgia.

Our team was visiting orphanages in Haiti, in partnership with Convoy of Hope and their Feed One Initiative, when Mark brought up the concept of the song. Their driver had taken them to visit a burial site where mass destruction had left the ground absolutely barren apart from a singular metal structure: a cross standing upon a hill overlooking the land. Chloe hung a flag that had the name of Jesus painted on it over that cross and we knew it was a significant moment for us as a team.

Fast forward a couple of years to a writing retreat in Clayton, Georgia. As God would have it, a huge cross was glowing in the evening sunset, set upon the mountain and overlooking the town where our cabin was located. We looked into the history of the cross and found out that it had remained through decades of opposition and petitions from locals to remove it. The parallels were clear. From a tragic graveyard in Haiti to the mountains of North Georgia, God was speaking. Through it all, the cross remains.

“The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.” – 1 Corinthians 1:18 (NLT)

Jesus’ death and resurrection are the foundation and bedrock of our faith, our anchor when the storms of life come, and our hope in times of trouble. Just like the cross in Haiti that stood in the midst of the rubble and chaos that had taken place around it, the power of the cross stands strong against any situation that you are facing.

Sometimes we try and add extra to the Gospel, but really the raw, true, real message is simple. God so loved the world that He sent His son to die on a cross for you and I that whoever believe in him shall not perish without eternal life. That’s what this song is about. It’s the core of our victory message. Just the cross, it’s enough.

“Come, and see the victories of the cross.
Christ’s wounds are thy healings,
His agonies thy repose,
His conflicts thy conquests,
His groans thy songs,
His pains thine ease,
His shame thy glory,
His death thy life,
His sufferings thy salvation.”
– Matthew Henry, 17th century Welsh minister
