The Lion King 1 1/2

“Disney’s The Lion King 1½,” also known simply as “Disney’s The Lion King” outside of North America, is a platform game developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Disney Interactive. Released for the Game Boy Advance on October 7, 2003, this game is based on the film of the same name, which is the third and final traditionally-animated film in The Lion King franchise. THQ handled distribution in Europe, and the game launched four months prior to the film’s debut.

In this game, players embark on a journey as Timon and Pumbaa to discover Hakuna Matata. The gameplay is divided into three modes: Solo, Cooperative, and Team. In Solo mode, players choose to control either Timon or Pumbaa to navigate through levels. Cooperative mode requires players to alternate between the two characters, utilizing their unique abilities to solve puzzles and complete tasks. Team mode features chase sequences with Timon riding Pumbaa, dodging obstacles to advance.

Completing levels unlocks video clips from the film, enhancing the game’s narrative connection to the movie. Players also collect grubs in each level to earn puzzle pieces, which, when fully collected, unlock a special time-limited bonus level for extra challenges and rewards. Additionally, the game includes hidden power-ups and upgrades that enhance the characters’ abilities, such as Timon’s hat & cane or Pumbaa’s stink bugs, adding depth to the gameplay.

“Disney’s The Lion King 1½” offers fans of the franchise an interactive way to relive the film’s story while enjoying a mix of puzzles and platforming action with their favorite characters.
