Batman Return of the Joker (NES)
Batman: Return of the Joker is a 1991 platform video game developed by Sunsoft as a sequel to their earlier Batman game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This game, however, is not based on the 1989 Batman film by Tim Burton but features an original storyline where Batman must thwart the Joker’s plans. The Joker has stolen various metals, one of which is a highly toxic material used to create explosives for missiles. Batman must navigate through seven stages, including Gotham City cathedral, the Joker’s warehouse, and various other challenging locations, each with unique sub-levels and bosses, except for certain stages that lack a boss fight.
The gameplay is a side-scrolling run and gun platformer where Batman uses a wrist projector as his weapon. Players can change the type of ammunition by collecting different icons: crossbow arrows that make enemies explode, Batarangs that follow enemies, Sonic Neutralizers that fire Batarangs in a criss-cross pattern, and Shield Stars that shoot darts in separate directions. Batman can perform a sliding attack and become temporarily invincible by collecting enough energy capsules. The game offers three lives, unlimited continues, and stage passwords for player progression.
