What Is Sin?

Sin goes beyond just violating God’s rules. The word sin means “to miss the mark,” as if you were shooting at a target and miss the bull’s-eye.

So, what are we missing?

The standard of holiness or God’s perfection.

The Ten Commandments are ‘moral’ standards most of the world can agree on. Even with just 10, we fall short.

“Therefore no one will be declared righteous in His sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.” (Romans 3:20)

No one on their own merit can achieve such right living. The Apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 3:23 that “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

As hard as we may try, we’re simply unable to be holy on our own. The Bible explains that this is because we are born inherently sinful. Sin entered the world when Satan, tempted Adam and Eve and they chose to rebel against God (Genesis 3). Their sin transformed their very nature and introduced spiritual death to humanity. We all inherited this sinful nature, just as people inherit heirlooms from their parents.

History is full the devastating effects of sin, our capability to hurt each other. Even our own consciences accuse us (Romans 2:15). All of this points to our desperate need for redemption.

The Bible explains that the penalty for our sin is eternal death (Romans 6:23, Revelation 20:11-15) and separation from God. But, Jesus redeems us. Through faith, “we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” (Ephesians 1:7)
