Work is important. It puts money in our bank accounts to help keep us fed and sheltered. And, the Bible says God honors a diligent laborer.

“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” Colossians 3:23 (NLT)

But, God also knows we need our rest. Even He rested “on the Seventh Day” (Genesis 2:2).

Rest from work is much easier to find these days — for most of us, compared to just a century ago. In fact, Labor Day emerged partially due to a need for workers to have a respite from their back-breaking jobs halfway between July 4th and Thanksgiving. The federal holiday’s origin story is a pretty interesting one.
