Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon
Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon is a tactical role-playing game for the Game Boy Advance, serving as a remake of the original Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention. This enhanced version was released to introduce new gameplay features, expanded plot elements, and additional characters, enriching the classic Shining Force experience.
Plot Overview
The story unfolds in the Kingdom of Guardiana, located within the mystical land of Rune. The protagonist, Max, who suffers from amnesia, is thrust into a dire mission to thwart the malevolent sorcerer Darksol from resurrecting the catastrophic Dark Dragon via the Shining Path. As Max journeys across diverse lands, he gathers a formidable group known as the Shining Force, comprising warriors, mages, and creatures, each with unique abilities.
Max’s quest leads him into confrontations with Darksol’s corrupted lieutenants, such as Kane and King Ramladu. The narrative peaks when Max crafts the legendary Chaos Breaker sword, which he uses to access the Castle of the Ancients—Darksol’s stronghold. The climax of the story occurs here, where Darksol, upon being mortally wounded, manages to unleash the Dark Dragon. In a decisive battle, Max and the Shining Force defeat the dragon, and Max uses the Chaos Breaker to seal it away. As the castle collapses, Max ensures his allies’ safety through teleportation but remains behind, presumed dead by his comrades. However, a post-credits scene hints at Max’s survival in a distant land.
This remake introduces a secondary narrative thread involving Narsha, the Princess of Runefaust, who initially opposes but later joins the Shining Force. Her story provides depth to the main plot, offering perspectives from within the enemy’s ranks and additional context to the overarching conflict. Alongside allies Zuika and Mawlock, Narsha’s journey from a foe to a critical ally is woven into the early chapters of the game as separate epilogues, enriching the storytelling and gameplay dynamics.
Gameplay
The game retains the core mechanics of tactical grid-based battles that define the Shining Force series but enhances them with new characters, special abilities, and items. The strategic depth is increased with the addition of special moves and the ability to upgrade character classes. The inclusion of new storylines and characters not only revitalizes the original narrative but also provides players with more strategies and team compositions to explore.
