Lufia: The Ruins of Lore
“Lufia: The Ruins of Lore,” also known in Japan as “Chinmoku no Iseki: Estpolis Gaiden,” is a role-playing video game that is the fourth installment in the Lufia series. Developed by Atelier Double and published by Taito in Japan in 2002 and by Atlus in North America in 2003, the game diverges from the main narrative arc of the Lufia series by positioning itself as a “gaiden” or side story. As such, it departs from series conventions by excluding elements like the Sinistrals and the Dual Blade.
Plot Overview: The story of “Lufia: The Ruins of Lore” is set two decades after the events of “Lufia II,” in a world that has enjoyed a period of peace following the defeat of the Sinistrals by the hero Maxim. However, this peace is disrupted when the Kingdom of Gratze, a burgeoning military power, aligns with a mysterious figure named Ragule and declares war on neighboring nations. Gratze’s ultimate objective is to capture a formidable creature known as “The Beast,” which they believe will guarantee their dominion over the world.
The narrative unfolds through the eyes of Eldin, a young adventurer seeking excitement and mysteries across the globe during this turbulent era. Early in his travels, Eldin encounters Rubius, a young priestess on a quest to gather mystical shards and stones. These artifacts are keys to unlocking access to a legendary holy land, pivotal to her mission.
Their adventures lead them directly to the heart of the conflict when they venture into Ragule’s fortress to obtain one of the crucial shards. It is here that Eldin and Rubius confront the tyrant Ragule and come to understand the grave implications of his ambitions. Resolved that peace will never return while Ragule remains in power, they set out to thwart his plans, setting the stage for a grand conflict that could shape the future of their world.
“Lufia: The Ruins of Lore” combines traditional RPG elements with a compelling narrative, inviting players to explore diverse environments, engage in battles, solve puzzles, and unravel a story of adventure, conflict, and heroism against the backdrop of a world teetering on the brink of war.
