Double Dragon 2 (Sega)

Double Dragon is a celebrated beat ’em up video game series that was first developed and published by Technōs Japan. The series began with the release of the arcade game Double Dragon in 1987 and stars twin martial artists, Billy and Jimmy Lee, who combat various adversaries and rivals.

The original Double Dragon arcade game became a monumental success, significantly influencing the beat ’em up genre. It heralded a “Golden Age” for these types of games, inspiring a multitude of similar titles throughout the late 1980s and 1990s that adhered to its gameplay style and mechanics. Despite its success in gaming, adaptations of Double Dragon into other media, including a 1993 animated series and a 1994 live-action film, did not receive the same positive reception, being generally criticized by both critics and audiences.

Gameplay across the Double Dragon series typically unfolds in a pseudo 3D perspective similar to earlier games like Renegade, allowing players to move in four directions but primarily facing left or right. Players primarily advance to the right across horizontally scrolling stages, encountering and fighting off various enemies. The series is known for its range of unarmed combat techniques and the use of melee weapons like baseball bats and throwing knives, which can be picked up from enemies or found on the ground. Some games in the series also feature special moves that can be executed in collaboration with a second player, enhancing the cooperative gameplay experience.
