Abadox (NES)

“Abadox: The Deadly Inner War,” known in Japan as “アバドックス” (Abadokkusu), is a distinctive entry into the niche of horizontally scrolling shooters, akin to classics like “Gradius” and “R-Type.” Developed by Natsume and published by the Milton Bradley Company in North America, the game made its debut on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989 in Japan and followed in North America in 1990. “Abadox” is recognized for its unique setting and high difficulty level, appealing to hardcore fans of the shoot ’em up genre.

Gameplay Mechanics:

In “Abadox,” players navigate through a perilous environment within the intestinal tract of a colossal alien organism named Parasitis. The game challenges players with its “one-hit” difficulty mechanic, where any contact with an enemy projectile results in instant death and a restart from the last checkpoint. This unforgiving aspect, combined with intricately designed levels filled with numerous enemies and obstacles, makes “Abadox” a test of precision and reflexes.

The visual style of “Abadox” is a standout feature, with grotesque and vividly rendered backgrounds that simulate the inner workings of an alien body. This setting not only adds a layer of originality but also enhances the game’s eerie and ominous atmosphere, setting it apart from other space shooters of its time.

Plot and Narrative:

The story of “Abadox” unfolds in the year 5012, when a peaceful planet named Abadox falls victim to a monstrous alien entity known as Parasitis. This fearsome creature consumes Abadox whole and morphs into a planet-sized predator, threatening the entire galaxy. After decimating the galactic military, only one hospital ship remains, carrying the devoured Princess Maria within the alien.

In a desperate move, the remnants of the galactic military deploy Second Lieutenant Nazal, their most skilled fighter, on a daring mission to penetrate the depths of Parasitis. His objective is not only to navigate the dangerous internal landscape of the alien but also to rescue Princess Maria from its clutches, adding a rescue mission element to the high-stakes adventure.
